چکیده

The neuromuscular effects of succinylcholine (SCh) were described1 by Bovet 1949. The drug was introduced into clinical anesthesia in the United States by Foldes et al 1952, who stated that “the advantages of succinylcholine as a muscular relaxant in anesthesiology far outweighed its disadvantages”2. Even today in the 6th decade of its use, SCh, despite complications, survived as the “gold standard” for rapid-sequence induction of anesthesia (RSI), against which other relaxants are compared3. The drug survived, despite the reported complications, because of the unique triad characterizing its neuromuscular block i.e. rapid onset, profound relaxation and short duration, which makes succinylcholine the drug of choice for rapid-sequence induction (RSI) of anesthesia in patients with full stomach, as well as the preferred relaxant for tracheal intubation in patients with a predicted difficult airway3-5.

Comparising the Succinylcholine onset effect with Atracurium - Alfentanyl in patient underwent rapid sequence Induction

Background: Succinylcholine is the most anesthetic drug used to muscle relaxation in emergency endotracheal intubation. Unfortunately it can have serious side effects. The perpose of our study was to comparison of Atracurium + Alfentanyl with succycholine. Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial study, one hundred patient randomly designated two group succinylcholine (control group) & At...

Rapid sequence induction with rocuronium - a challenge to the gold standard

Succinylcholine has been indicted on account of the diverse risks associated with its administration, which include hyperkalemia, vagal arrest, and malignant hyperthermia. However, it provides excellent intubating conditions reliably and quickly, characteristics that sustain its appeal for use in the intensive care unit, where airway management is challenging. There is an increasing body of evi...

Desaturation following rapid sequence induction using succinylcholine vs. rocuronium in overweight patients.

BACKGROUND Rapid sequence induction may be associated with hypoxemia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the possible difference in desaturation during rapid sequence induction in overweight patients using either succinylcholine or rocuronium. METHODS Sixty patients with a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 30 kg/m², American Society of Anesthesiologists class I or II, undergoing ...

Succinylcholine: The Dilemma with the Evidence

To the editor: We have read with interest the case report by Terijian and colleagues and the comment from Brodsky et al. [1, 2]. We fully agree with the authors that succinylcholineassociated myalgia might be a serious issue for many patients, especially for morbidly obese patients. But we were a little bit surprised about the authors’ opinion that there are no proven strategies to reduce succi...

Sugammadex as a reversal agent for neuromuscular block: an evidence-based review

Sugammadex is the first clinical representative of a new class of drugs called selective relaxant binding agents. It has revolutionized the way anesthesiologists think about drug reversal. Sugammadex selectively binds rocuronium or vecuronium, thereby reversing their neuromuscular blocking action. Due to its 1:1 binding of rocuronium or vecuronium, it is able to reverse any depth of neuromuscul...
